This is another piece I plan to use for my concentration once its finished. This will be a portrait of my neighbors granddaughter at disney. When she gave me the commision she told me she wanted it because she was afraid she wouldn't remember going there once she grows up. I knew then it would be perfect for my concentration. Im using prismacolor colored pencils and ive found it to be very difficult and time consuming. Im very used to being able to erase or go over work I dont like and although the pencils can partially erase, its hard to removed unwanted color.
This is an oil that I did outside of class that has not yet been completed. I have never used a palette knife to paint before so this was a new experience for me. I usually dont do or enjoy landscapes very much but ive found that i really like palette knife painting . Each color i only partially mixed so that i never had solid colors and it gave it more depth. I really liked the way the paint moved around but its hard to add to it after it has dried ive learned.
For my concentration i've decided to have a theme of things you cont remember about your past. This pencil drawing is of me as a baby at what I believe is my second birthday party. It was done with pencils 8B-HB. Since i have never drawn a baby before this was a stretch for me because I learned childrens features are much different than teens or adults. For my boundaries piece I was inspired by personal boundaries. Though I thought of it as physical and personal boundaries instead of emotional or social. When you touch someone, there is always a barrier of atoms between you and them. So, even though it feel like you’re touching, you never really are. My piece was two hands clenched together, showing an emphasis on the clenching of the knuckles. I’m trying to convey that no matter how tight you’re holding on to someone you’re never actually touching. I think that this conveys a boundary that no one really thinks about day to day, and it interests me alot. I did the piece in colored pencil (prismacolor), which I have never used for an actual piece before. So, I was breaking one of my own boundaries by taking a risk. I really wanted to use color in this piece because of the contrasting colors in her fingers. There was representation of almost every color and I thought that black and white wouldn’t really convey the same liveliness that color would for this piece. I think that medium is extremely important in the perception of artwork; medium can change the tone and message of the piece. I like the tone that I set for this piece, I feels softer and more subtle than if I were to use paint or markers. I am overall pleased with the piece and hope to use it in my college portfolio possibly. This piece is also not completely finished
Learning pen and ink skills was fun for me. The basics of using a calligraphy pen and ink was fairly simple and I enjoyed doing it. The only hard part for me was figuring out how much ink was enough or too much to put in the pen. I really liked the concept bloom where you are planted. I usually try to look a little deeper into the themes, so I stayed away from anything plant related. For my piece I chose to use my quote from the inspiration board. I used purple ink and a standard sized tip and left the background blank. The quote, from Jimi Hendrix was “It all had to come from inside, though, I guess”.I felt this related because your personality is in your mind, everything that you are is inside you. You were planted in your body, in your mind, so that is the only place you can bloom. It all has to come from inside.
I earned an A in AP Art/Studio Art II because of the improvements I made to my outlook on the creative process. Before I took Art this year I had no idea what to expect of a school art class, the only art classes I’d taken were oil painting classes. I was worried I would learn that I was somehow doing something wrong or we’d have strict assignments, but that wasn't the case. This class allowed me to experience new techniques and mediums I couldn't have before. I learned that art couldn't be confined to one idea, but to make it yours you can bend that idea to whatever you want. I have learned to take risks with my art. Instead of the normal graphite portraits, I learned to love still lives and mediums like colored pencil and watercolor. I had given up on chalk pastels until I started using them in portraits, I had never thought that was even possible. I’ve become more motivated in general, completing tasks is easy and fun for me. The choice of the 2-D portfolio was great for me because it allowed me to explore with mediums like photography and digital design. The printmaking way back at the beginning of the year was something that i liked but wanted to do on a larger scale. So making the stencils for fabric printing was really fun for me. Another thing i have improved on is I think i’m a better writer. It was hard for me to reflect on my art at the beginning of the year because I had never done it before. Being in AP was a struggle for me at times but was ultimately worth it in the end because it made me a better artist and person.
